Cycling

Two cycleways pass along the road from Murton to Dufton and past the entrance to the winery. These are the Pennine Cycleway and the Cumbria Cycleway.

Route 68The Pennine Cycleway (National Cycle Network No 68) runs from Derby to Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Cumbria cyclewayThe 280-mile, circular Cumbria Cycle Way (RCN 30) was Britain’s first long-distance route and is being upgraded to current national network standards in terms of safety and quality. It is mainly on minor roads and forms links between railway stations to give cyclists options to miss out sections. The full route is: Carlisle-Brampton-Langwathby-Appleby-Kirkby Stephen-Garsdale-Sedbergh-Kirkby Lonsdale-Arnside-Grange-Ulverston-Barrow-Broughton-Millom-Ravenglass-Whitehaven-Maryport-Silloth-Bowness on Solway.

Further information can be obtained in the route guide book: The Cumbria Cycle Way - Roy Walker & Ron Jarvis. ISBN: 1-85284-106-0.

Mountain biking

Serious mountain bikers often attempt the route up to High Cup Nick, but this is not easy. The circular clockwise route from Dufton to Harbour Flat gives a rough and slow route up to the Nick along the Pennine Way footpath, but a fast ride down along Middle Tongue. Cyclists should not miss the short return trip from the Nick to the footbridge over Maize Beck.

During opening hours, cyclists will be able to call at Townhead Farm, take a rest, and purchase bottles of wine for enjoyment at the end of a hard day’s cycling!
