Walking

There are several walks which take in the spectacular scenery of High Cup Nick. Walking High Cup Nick can be started either from Dufton car park or the top of the road to the Pennine Way. This information is also available in our downloadable walking map

Walk 1 (green)

Park in car park in Dufton or at the end of the road to the Pennine Way. In an anticlockwise direction the route circum climbs on the northwest side of the valley towards High Cup Nick as shown on the map below. If you have enough energy it is worth extending the experience with a short detour through the limestone pavement to the bridge over Maize Beck. Either return the same way or continue in a clockwise direction along Middle Tongue. From here either head towards Harbour Flatt farm and the road or head towards High Cup Gill, crossing it where the stream passes through the wall. Head towards Keisley Bank keeping the wall on the left. Follow a path towards Townhead Farm and then back to the Pennine Way near Bow Hall.

Walk 2 (purple)

After following Walk 1 along the Pennine way for a short distance, branch off left through a gate and aim for a gate through the final wall onto the moor land. From here follow the path towards cairns visible on the ridges to the northeast. The path follows the edge of the crags and eventually descends to High Cup Plain shortly before Maize Beck

Walk 3 (blue)

Follow Walk 1 to High Cup Nick, but then for the return descend to High Cup Gill over the rocky scree. Take care on the steep descent. From there the route follows an easy path to the road at Harbour Flatt. This walk is probably best done in the reverse direction.

The following map shows the walks.
